The sum of my fears

by Heather on July 10, 2009

Another one of the many pregnant ladies I work with gave birth yesterday, and as I was looking at the pictures of her new son on Facebook, I started thinking about the future.  She’s about ten years younger than me and her daughter just turned three and I’m sitting there thinking how, when she’s my age,  she’ll be the mother of a teenage daughter.

Hell, I wouldn’t want to be dealing with a teenager now, I thought.  Living through the trying threes is bad enough.  I just don’t have that kind of energy.  And then, even though I envied my coworker a little bit for the new life she had just brought into this world, I was feeling thankful that I wasn’t her.

But then I stopped being smug and realized something.

In ten years I will be the mother of a teenage daughter.

I’m thirty-seven now.

In ten years I will not be thirty-seven anymore.

LOL!! In 10 years you will be ready to be the parent of a teenager — or as ready as you’ll ever be. :-) You will be fine. You will grow as Autumn grows. Being the parent of a teenager is fun – for the most part… except when they are out with the car driving to a destination without you… THAT is scary.

I’ve decided that we’ll never be ready for it, no matter the age.

You want a scary thought? My mom was 36 when I came along, so she had to deal with the worst of me at the same time she turned 50. It’s no wonder I’m in therapy ;) (I’m just giving you a hard time!)

One of the best part of growing up with “older” parents was that they were more financially secure and I was able to do things that other kids couldn’t afford. Just a thought for you.

When I’m your age, *I* will be the mother of a teenage daughter.

Actually, that’s not completely true. I’ll be the mother of TWO teenage daughters! HA!

Na. They’re good kids. I’ll be fine. Really. Yes, my 10yr old DOES want to learn to drive RIGHT NOW! Why do you ask?
