This weekend was very long.  I don’t normally say that because I live for the weekend, but Autumn has been horribly cranky since she started cutting her eye teeth and would I be the most horrible mom in the world if I said I was so glad when she went to bed last night?

Riley is with us now and we had to crate both dogs yesterday while we took the afternoon off to actually do some adult stuff like go to a movie and have dinner out without having to worry about sippy cups and bibs and cleaning up the floor before we leave the restaurant.  The movie was Blades of Glory and the restaurant was Panera Bread, but it was nice all the same.

Autumn had a good time with her grandparents while we were gone, though her visit ended on a sour note when she tripped over a rug and did a face plant into the floor.  She’s okay and had a honking huge Easter basket of goodies to console her.  My parents (or rather my mother) really did it up this year.  Our Easter basket is rather modest compared to theirs.  We ended up getting her a bunch of plastic toys from the cheap bin at target and filled some eggs with Goldfish crackers.  We didn’t do candy because we knew my parents were so we also got her a Mr. Potato head Easter bunny from Costco that Nathan had a good time playing with.  A few minutes after the box was opened Mr. Potato head looked like he had just taken a stroll through Chernobyl.

So back to the dogs.  Riley is a big dog and he arrived with a big crate.  His crate is about twice the size of Molly’s, so when we pushed them both in before leaving yesterday I couldn’t help but feel bad for Molly.  While Riley was nice and stretched out in his condo-like accommodations, Molly was hunched over and drooling on her blanket.  I told Nathan Molly’s cage seemed more like a VietCong torture cell but his response was that she put herself in this position and that we shouldn’t feel sad for her.

So right now we’re debating on whether or not to let Molly have the run of the upstairs, but we have to ask ourselves “How stupid are we really?”  One the one hand we feel bad to have to confine her, but on the other hand we have a laundry list of items she’s destroyed and our basement still smells like dog pee (yes it does, Nathan).

With the exception of making a new best friend in Autumn and practically shoving his nose on her tray whenever she eats, Riley has been pretty good so far.  He slept in our room the entire night, which is more than I can say for our own dog.  He had a hard time settling down until we took the vacuum cleaner out of the room and brought in his pillow, though every time he left the room I woke up and wondered if I’d find a thank-you gift for us in the living room this morning.

Don’t feel bad about Molly’s crate. You’re really only supposed to have one big enough for them to stand up and turn around in. Otherwise she would find a spot to go potty in there and then be able to get away from it. It’s really a good house breaking thing, I promise.

But enough of my vet advice! I’m jealous that you guys got an “Adult Date”. I think I’m going to have to schedule one soon. By the way, did you like Blades of Glory? It looks hilarious!

Yes, the movie was funny. You really have to admire Will Ferrel’s bravery because he really makes a fool out of himself. I especially liked the movie because my mom and I used to be total figure skating geeks. We went to the nationals three times back in the ’90s.

About the crate, I actually think it’s a little small for Molly since she hunches over when she’s stitting up. She can lay down without a problem, but things get tight otherwise. We don’t really want to buy a bigger crate because we’re hoping this is temporary and that Molly will stop messing on the carpet soon.
