These are all great ideas, ladies. I was actually considering investing in some snow shoes next year. Back when I lost a lot of weight I actually asked for a pair for Christmas but wound up getting something else.

The winter-wear issue is one that I'm using as an excuse to get inside. Thanks for letting me know I have options :-)

I get our snow gear on line at Sierra Trading - it's much cheaper (look in the clearance section). You really only need snow or ski pants and a jacket. We like to sled, go ice skating (the rink is cold, but there isn't any wind and once we get going, we usually end up taking our coats off...), have snow ball fights (if the snow is right), and make snow angels, try cross country skiing or tubing or even down hill skiing (although that's definitely a rich man's sport unless you can get discount tickets like we do)...
Ice skating was our favorite until we moved the country where the rink is over an hour away. We miss it...
YMMV

If you are being active, you need a lot less winter clothes than you think. Try for a good fleece jacket and a down vest over it. Good warmth, and you should be able to find it all in your size, even if you have to go men's for the fleece. Good boots shouldn't be too hard either. Instead of long underwear, head somewhere like Avenue, Old Navy or Lane Bryant for cotton leggings. They do just as well. (Lands End has vests up to 3X on sale now, though not sure what size you are)

Snow forts? Those snow ball makers (though one of our snow has been right for either of those things this year). Nature center's sometimes have winter animal things. In our little city hood we have a regular rabbit we like to track. Science stuff? We have a giant magnifying glass, good for snowflakes. Bird feeder and winter bird watching?

I have it easy, it has either been cold, wet (raining) or both. Also, M is two, and she fine with hanging out while I shovel the sidewalk.
