Is there a Y chromosome in the house?

by Heather on March 4, 2010

Yesterday a tweet from my local paper caught my attention. It went something like this:

The one person who retweeted this would be me. It immediately caught my attention because:

A) Who does this sort of thing?

B) What was the incident that led the cops to discover this guy was performing circumcisions without a medical license?

Before you judge and deem my interest to be strictly prurient, which I admit it sort of was, I was more intrigued with this fake doctor’s clientele.

Because the dude was performing these circumcisions from his house.

HIS HOUSE!

Gentlemen, please explain the circumstances that would compel you to entrust your most treasured body part to a guy performing circumcisions from his own house.

Last night Nathan and I watched coverage of this story on one of the local news channels, and as the details were discussed we sat with our mouths agape feeling as though we’d just been transported to freaking Mayberry, especially after law enforcement explained the victims were fooled into thinking the guy was a doctor because he wore a white lab coat.

Seriously? The white coat fooled y’all but the fact that this dude was performing circumcisions from HIS HOUSE didn’t raise any red flags?

While I was envisioning a horrific Lorena Bobbitt-esque debacle leading to this guy’s arrest, it was actually an ex-lover who turned him in. Local law enforcement are asking anyone who may have patronized the fake doc to come forward.

Good luck with that. I’m sure there are plenty of people out there just waiting to become a footnote in this story.

Update:

After discussing the story with a coworker (because I just HAD to), I discovered there’s a large Hispanic population in Sparta where Dr. Snip lives. My coworker, who’s also Hispanic, said in Mexico it’s not uncommon for people to seek treatment in homes rather than offices.

So there you are. Cultural differences may explain how Dr. Snip managed to stay in business. It doesn’t explain WHY he went into the business in the first place.

I was thinking about the same when I seen that on the news. Why would anyone let anyone do surgery on them in their home! Crazy!
