Smiles, frowns and sunburned crowns

by Heather on August 4, 2008

We had a great time at the family reunion yesterday, though I did come home with a nice set of red shoulders and chesticles. Nathan and I spent well over an hour wading in murky water amongst the dead bugs and seaweed so that our kid could enjoy a swim. I did put sunscreen on twice and am wondering how effective that SPF 70 spray really was (care to comment, Neutrogena?). Thankfully Autumn seems to be burn-free, which is a relief because the child needs no more reasons to be grouchy after a weekend of no naps.

The best part of the day was seeing family we haven’t seen since my mother-in-law’s funeral. Nathan’s cousin Kerri got married last December on the Saturday after I slipped and fell in my driveway. His cousin Shelly had a baby shower the weekend after my surgery and I had to miss both events. Luckily I didn’t miss them this time and was able meet this little gal here:

Little do her parents know what’s in store for them. In a couple of years they’ll be getting pictures like this:

Autumn is doing her best Sean Penn impersonation by demanding that I not take her picture. Ha! Kid, the day I don’t take your picture is the day I forget I even have a camera. Deal with it.

Cracks me up. It reminds me of these pictures I have. It’s Squeaks with 2 of her friends and the 1st pic is all of them together when they are under a year old. They’re all so sweet and angelic. And then there’s one taken of the 3 of them this summer. They’re all so evil looking that it’s scary!

Ah, I remember both phases of pictures and see more of the second now that my nephews are older….wait for the teen years, the looks they give you can break the camera, I tell you this from experience.
sorry you got sunburn, I am super sensitive to the sun because of some of the pills I take and even sunscreen doesn’t always do the trick…something to consider if you take any medications regularly.
I have not had a family reunion in years, miss them.

Mama Bear, are you familiar with the cruise line commercial where the teenage daughter spends the bulk of the trip being all sullen and only smiles once? My husband asked me, “Is our kid going to be like that?” I didn’t know what to say other than “probably.”

It seems no matter what age she is, I’ll continue to look back fondly on days past.
