A little bit of me and a whole lot of you

by Heather on September 2, 2008

My weekend was great.  How was yours?  I took my mom and grandma to see my cousin Dave and his family.  It’s been years since we’ve seen them and Sunday was a great day to meet up.  The weather was gorgeous and I didn’t get lost, which is a miracle considering I almost always get lost when I drive a ways with my mom in the car.

Autumn came with us and we all met at Cracker Barrel for breakfast.  It was the first time any of Dave’s family had met Autumn, though his wife Kristi is a regular reader here (hi, Kristi!).  My mom asked them who they thought Autumn resembled more, me or Nathan, and I inwardly cringed because I was sitting right there.  Raise your hand if you want to tell the parent sitting across the table from you that her child looks nothing like her.  Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Kristi was very diplomatic and said Autumn was a good mix of both Nathan and me.  I’ve actually heard that a lot.  There’s a little bit of him and a little bit of me in there.  The attitude comes from me and the delight in flatulence comes from him.

I thought it might be interesting (at least to me) to post some pictures of the three of us and put it up to a vote.  Who do you think the child most resembles?  Mommy or Daddy?

When I look at the picture of Nathan as a toddler, I see a lot of my kid in that face, more so than I do when I look at my own picture.  Nathan’s face is rounder like Autumn’s and they have the same nose.  That nose was the first thing I noticed about her when she was born.

I certainly hope she takes after him in other ways.  Nathan was thin all though high school, and I’m really kind of hoping my contribution to the gene pool will include thick hair and a love of language and NOT the ability to gain weight just by passing the pasty case at the grocery store.

Aww..Heather we had a great time too! I see the pics of both of you now and I see the things you mentioned about Autumn resembling Nathan. I think she does have some of you though and I tell you, I would kill for that hair of hers.
Its the same for me with Griffin…I don’t know think he looks anything like me. I don’ t necessarily think he looks just like Dave either though. I told Dave the other day I wish we had just one more so we could see another combination of our genes. Its amazing how differently they can mix and give you kids that look so uniquely themselves.
I have read babies look more like dad so the dad will be more drawn to them because a mother has more of a bond from pregnancy and is more likely to just love their baby. A man must need some incentive. haha I don’t remember where I read that and I can’t imagine they have any proof, but I thought it was interesting.

You – she is all you.
And, yes, it ticks me off to no end when hubby’s family will go sixteen generations back to find a family resemblance rather than say a kid looks like me. I want them to all look like me – only cuter.

First of all, adorable pics! I think Autumn looks a lot like you as far as her features (eyes & brows esp) but she also has some of Nathan’s facial structure. I agree, a mix between you both – and isn’t that the best way for them to be? :)

ps: I’m reading “I was told there would be cake” by Sloane Crosley- it’s a memoir of somewhat funny/snarky short stories. Thought you might like!

That is a good book! I have it if you want me to mail it to you Heather :)

I know what you mean! People have always said my daughter looks more like my husband than me. Just now they’re starting to say she looks like me, and I’m afraid they may just be being polite!

That’s right I had trouble yesterday with my comments…
I see her having your eyes and his mouth, and remember little ones look like other family members too. My oldest resembles my father a lot, and our middle child looks like his uncle, Allen’s brother….sounds like him too.
I have to ask is that a Little People McDonald’s set? If you still have it, keep it…they are very collectible these days. I still have my original Main Street, bus, and an A-Frame house with the wooden people.

I think she looks a lot like you but she looks like her dad too. Seriously, when I looked at the first picture, I thought that was your daughter and then went back and seen that it said “mommy”. Cute pictures!

Lindsay-thanks for the book recommendation. It might be awhile before I have a chance for some leisure reading, but I’ll keep it in mind!

Mama Bear-yeas, that is a Little People McDonalds set, but I don’t know if my parents still have it. Mom mom kept a lot of those Fisher Price sets in hopes of one day seeing her grandchildren play with them. She has yet to pull them out of storage :-)

As long as I’ve been reading your blog, I’ve always thought that Autumn was your spitting image. I’ve been pictures of Nathan, but I still think it’s YOU. Now that you put some of his baby pics up, I can see the resemblance, but you don’t have to worry AT ALL about her not looking like you!

PS: I think she’s beautiful!

Wow – I think I’d have to agree. Mom + Dad = Autumn!

Oh man does that McDonalds play set bring back memories! My grandma had one she kept at her house for us to play with. I wish I still had it…
