If it ain’t broke, don’t genetically engineer an inferior substitute

Before today I had never heard of the Slimcado, but there it was sitting in the veggie section of my favorite market.  I picked it up.  It was about the size of a mango and I read the label; “35% fewer calories and 50% less fat” than the regular avocados in the bin next to it.

My first thought was to wonder why anyone would want to make a low fat avocado.  While they are high in fat, the avocado has the kind of heart-healthy fat you don’t find in cheesecake and Big Macs.  Still, you don’t want to eat a whole avocado in one shot.  Just one of those suckers has at least 30 grams of (good) fat.  Ouch!

I guess that’s where the Slimcado comes in.  I was intrigued and bought one, though I have since learned through an unfavorable online review that my money would have been better spent buying three more run-of-the-mill avocados.

Bigger (and lighter) is not always better.

So, um, does anyone know if avocados are okay to give to dogs?

Well huh. Apparently no genetically engineered, just a different variety that is “slimmer” I’ve seen both before, but Haas are easier to find…

Yes, safe for dogs. That little tidbit cost me a 40 buck donation to the pet poison hot line to find out after Tess ate avocado skins off of the counter.

Raisins, onions, garlic and ibuprofin are all toxic to dogs. Doesn’t stop her from getting garlic breath on a regular basis.

I had heard about these avocados, and seen a pregnant mama holding one up in front of her very pregnant belly.

The fat is what makes avocados sooooo good! fat=flavor, and creaminess, and, well, mmmmm lol

Thanks for posting this, I hadn’t heard any feedback on them other than about how gigantic they are. My avocado budget is too tight to spend on bland, yucky fruit.

Well, that just seems…wrong. I’ve recently come to the decision that eating something that’s been engineered to be “better” for me usually means it tastes like crap, so I just eat less of the regular kind. I know, groundbreaking.

Garlic is toxic to dogs? I know a few people that give it to their pets to boost their immune system…

Good news, the SlimCado is all natural. It’s just a different variety of avocado than the haas or Californian avocado. We grow them in Southern Florida vs the dry climate (California) that the haas is grown in. If you think about it, southern Florida is anything but dry so an avocado grown in Florida is going to taste different.

Making guacamole? I agree that haas is king there. Most folks like slicing SlimCados to top salads, sandwiches, hamburgers. My favorite is dicing a SlimCado up to top a hot soup. It melts a little which makes it even better.

Food for thought, I guess literally. And yes I work for the company, Brooks Tropicals.

My first thought is “No, no, for the love of GOD, no!”

Genetically engineered foods scare the bejesus out of me. I mean, I guess most major food crops are hybrids of some sort now through cross pollination or what have you, , but really, “engineering” an avocado and calling it the “Slimcado”? What’s next? Ba-Corn? “It tastes just like bacon due to the spliced-in pig DNA, but without all that nasty pork fat! Mmmm!”

The SlimCado is all natural, it’s not Genetically engineered!!! It’s just a different variety of avocado than the haas or Californian avocado. I grew up in Texas & ate ALOT of avocado, and I think these are wonderful. The one I just ate was smooth & creamy & delicious ( i like them straight out of the rind, i just scoop & eat) Don’t be turned off by thinking it’s ome kind of genetic mutational experiment, IT’S NOT! Give it a chance, it is YUMMY!!
